Our mission: To preserve, promote, improve and strengthen public schools for both current and future generations of students.

It’s been quite some time since we’ve put out a Grassroots Newsletter – the second half of 2017 has been tumultuous, with privatization battles happening in many states across the country. Here at NPE, we’ve been doing what we can to provide you with the tools to help fight those battles and educate the general public.

Many of you have made use of the NPE Privatization Toolkit we published back in April. We wanted to take a moment to let you know about other helpful resources we’ve released since we last wrote to you.

We released Charters and Consequences, a 48 page report that is the result of investigations, visits and interviews over the course of a year. To accompany that report, we’ve compiled a webpage called Another Day Another Charter Scandal, where we’ve archived a year’s worth of charter scandals and corruption cases.

December Grassroots Stories

This month we are excited to welcome new groups in Nebraska, New York, Michigan and South Carolina. Our new Michigan partner, Michigan Network for Equity in Education (MNEE), has a story below about the work that they do. We also have a story from Save Our Schools NJ about the much anticipated end of the Chris Christie era, and what that means for public education in that state. And finally, our national partner, In the Public Interest, contributed a piece about the need for charter reform in California.

CALIFORNIA, THE WILD WEST OF CHARTER SCHOOLS, NEEDS COMMON SENSE REFORMS

With more charter schools than any other state, California is ground zero for the “school choice” movement’s ongoing disruption of public education.
