During the annual NAACP convention in Cincinnati, the delegates stood up to the charter school lobby and the billionaires that support it. Delegates passed a resolution to put a moratorium on the expansion of privately managed charter schools.  They also passed resolutions against the excessive disciplinary practices, waste, fraud, and sorting and selecting of students in admissions associated with charters.

Read why it occurred, and why it is important here.

As expected, corporate reformers were outraged, with some individuals attacking the organization as ‘out of touch’ and worse. No doubt the leadership will be under enormous pressure to undo the resolutions in the fall.

Good news from Tennessee

Although Stand for Children inserted itself and its money in Tennessee school board races, grassroots groups fought back. Read about their great success here.

The ACLU reports on illegal and exclusionary enrollment practices in California charters.

According to a new report by the ACLU of Southern California, 20% of all California charter schools are engaging in practices that exclude some students and are in violation of the law.  You can read the full report here.

Network for Public Education to issue a major report on charter schools in 2017.

NPE will issue a major report on issues of concern regarding charter schools in 2017. It will include on-the-ground interviews in California, Texas, Illinois, Pennsylvania and New York. In September, I will be in Houston and Austin focusing on the Gulen Charter chain. If you live in those cities and have a story to tell about Gulen, contact me at cburris@networkforpubliceducation.org.

Thank you for all that you do. Get others to join NPE. And please share our newsletters and action alerts.
