LYNN ASHBY: School vouchers are a scam
In a nutshell, vouchers would take money from Texas’ public schools and give it to private schools. Parents would get $8,000 per child annually for 13 years. Vouchers would cost taxpayers $568.9 million in 2025, $791.1 million in 2026, and $1.2 billion in fiscal year 2028. But Texas also has 1,200 accredited private schools. Could these students qualify for a voucher? Vouchers for 1 million children attending private schools or being home-schooled would cost approximately $8 billion annually.
